How to Hide a Disk Partition

You may want to keep certain information away from prying eyes or you may want to protect a recovery partition from accidental deletions or overwrites. Wel this can be accomplished by hiding the partition from view. This article will give you the steps for doing that.

Step 1
Click on the on screen "Start" button, usually found on the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Then click on "Control Panel"

Step 2
Within the Control Panel select the Administrative Tools icon. Once the Administrative Tools box pop up click on Computer Management.

Step 3
Once the Computer Management box pops up you can close the other windows.
On the lower left-hand side click on Disk Management.
The right-hand side will list the different drives and their partitions with additional information and also a graphical display of the drives.

Step 4
Right click on the drive or drive partition you wish to hide.
Select Change Letter and Path... option from the popup menu.
A new box will appear with the options to "Add" "Delete" "Remove".
Select the Remove option and confirm it by clicking on Yes in the dialogue box that pops up.

Your drive/partition is virtually hidden from the from everybody else. That is it will not be displayed in the My Computer window nor through the Windows Explorer file manager.

Step 5
Notes:

1. The hidden partition is hidden from all and is inaccessible until a system administrator perform steps 1-4 again only this time instead of selecting the option to remove, the option to add the partition should be made.

2. System partitions cannot be hidden.

3. The hidden drives are only hidden with the operating system they were hidden in. If there are multiple operating systems on the computer or the system is booted from a LiveCD/DVD then the drive will be visible to the other operating systems.
