How to Speed up your Computer using the MSCONFIG Utility

Have you been noticing that your computer seems more sluggish than it used to be? There could be many reasons for this including having too many programs running in the background. There's just so much CPU and memory to go around. You can put a stop to a lot of unnecessary programs that may be hogging your computer's resources. Here's how...

Step 1
First, go to the start menu and within the Run or Search menu (depending on which version of Windows you have), type, "MSCONFIG" and it will open a window with several tabs. This includes the Services and Startup tabs that show all the background programs running on your computer.

Step 2
Go to the Startup tab and scroll through the list to become familiar with all the programs. Then unclick those programs that you know do not need to be running in the background. Click the Apply button.

Step 3
Now go to the Services tab to see a list of all the service programs running in the background. At the bottom of the list window, you should see a check box indicating "hide all Microsoft services." Check this box and you will only see all other (non-Microsoft) services in the list. Go through this new list and uncheck all those services that you know are not needed.

Step 4
Click the OK button and restart your computer. Hopefully, you'll see at least some of the sluggishness go away. This will depend on what programs/services you have stopped.
